Fiio Q5 ( The Bluetooth Headphone Amp)

If you are looking for an elelgant DAC headphone amplifier with bluetooth, then, Fiio Q5 would be a good choice for you.
Why ?
Well, without further ado, let’s jump onto the following part to see this exciting DAC/AMP combo.

The main features of Fiio Q5

  1. There are two AK4490EN DAC chips, which are widely known for its smooth, pleaseant and detail sound, because it has a high signal to noise ratio and low distortion.
  2. Adopt XMOS XUF208 from Xmos USB audio platform, compatible with USB2.0,  ensuring stable connection for most of the audio sources. Supports PCM and Xmos up to 384 kHz/32 bit, as well as native DSD up to 256.
  3. Bluetooth 4.2, support Aptx
  4. 3.5mm headphone jack+2.5mm balance output
  5. 3 certification , MFI, Hi-res audio and Aptx bluetooth.
  6. Interchaneable amp modules, AM3A wich OPA926 chip.
  7. Independent bluetooth control button, control the device more convenient.
  8. Dual micro usb design, one for charging, one for data connection
  9. 3800mA battery, up to 20 hours if you are using it as independent headphone amp

Appearance Design

FiiO Q5 is using alluminium alloy housing which has an elegant and slick appearance. This alloy housing is simple but has a nice look. It is also helps to keep out electromagnetic interference.

The good thing is that it has a PU leather at the backside, which can avoid the device to be scratched.

Inputs, Outputs, and Switches

The FiiO Q5 supports variety of sources, including micro USB, line out 3.5 mm, coaxial, optical, and Bluetooth. And there are two output options: single-ended 3.5 mm and balanced 2.5 mm. The single-ended output can drive headphones with impedances up to 150 ohms. The balanced output can drive headphones with impedances up to 300 ohms.

Does it need to install the driver before use ? Well, for apple OS systerm, no need to install the driver. But for Windows, you need to install the driver to get more function.

Additionally, there are two switches on the FiiO Q5. One is a low gain/high gain switch which tells the amplifier how much power to supply. Another is a bass boost which sounds quite natural, although it is a bit over-the-top.

When switched on, the low end (probably somewhere between 60 Hz and 100 Hz based on my ear), sounded bombastic which didn’t work for many genres but worked well for others.

Another good thing is that it supports the WM-Ports used in Sony Walkmans.

Professional Audio Line Structure

The low-pass fillter section of Fiio Q5 adopts OPAA1642 professional chip from Texas Instruments,  and the microcontroller adopt MSP432 ( Industrial level), ensuring the audio signal s are precisely handled with lower power consumption for longer battery life.

Power Supplies -One of the most remarkable features

One of the most remarkable features for FiiO Q5 DAC is that each different output and control has its own power supply. There are totally 7 LOD( Low Dropout Operator) circuit inside, as a result, it prevents digital audio signals from crossing paths with power which could be dirty and introduce noise into the signal. The DAC, line out, volume control IC, low pass filter, amplifier, Xmost, and Bluetooth all have individual power supply filters.

The FiiO Q5 supports Bluetooth 4.2, aptX, AAC, and SBC.
You might be wondering:
Will Fiio Q5 has a good sound via bluetooth ?
I can tell you that, yes, it deliver a good sound.
Because it bypasses the Bluetooth DAC and sends it directly to the AK4490 DAC chip. As a result, it has lower total harmonic distortion, crosstalk, and a lower noise floor.

There is an independent bluetooth control button on FiiO Q5, when you connect the bluetooth with your player, you even can play, pause or change the songs on Q5, not on the player. Sounds great?

It has a battery life of 10 hours for most uses, although if you’re listening via the aux line input, you can actually listen for up to 25 hours. Additionally, it takes about 3.5 hours to charge fully.

Interchangeable Amplifier Modules (One of the most interesting features)

You must familiar with this, right ?
Because this design already was used in Fiio X7 mark II.
And Fiio Q5 also comes with the same amp module as Fiio X7 2nd Gen, AM3A. Besides, this module includes the same op-amp used in the FiiO X7 Mark II. The X7 II sounds superb, so it was no surprise because this Q5 sounds awesome too!

–MFi-made for iDevices ( Ipod, Iphone, Ipad)
–Hi-Res-Japan Audio Society
–Aptx– includes Qualcomm CSR8670 Bluetooth chip; also Q5’s Bluetooth can be upgraded through USB firmware updates

The sound of the FiiO Q5 DAC and headphone amplifier is clean and uncolored. Due to its super clean power situation, it provides a deeper sense of soundstage . Whether I was listening at very low levels the left-to-right response still felt balanced. And at high listening levels, I couldn’t hear any distortion at all. Overall, the sound was full and real.
